Story mapping is another instructional strategy that can foster reading comprehension. It is often used in conjunction with guided reading. This strategy asks students to make a map the content of a passage by drawing sketches. This helps students connect the reading material with more concrete images.It was hypothesized that students who use reading comprehension strategies while reading retain more information and comprehend the text better. It was also hypothesized that students who have good reading comprehension skills perform better on reading.Strategic reading is defined as the ability of the reader to use a wide variety of reading strategies to accomplish a purpose for reading (Nunan, 2003). Strategic reading means not only knowing what strategy to use, but knowing how to use and integrate a range of strategies (Anderson, 1991).
General Reading Strategies W hen you first read an article or research paper, focus on asking specific questions about each section. This strategy can help with overall comprehension and with understanding how the content relates (or does not relate) to the problem you want to investigate.Researchers have found that teaching reading strategies is a key element in developing student comprehension. However, many teachers lack a solid foundation for teaching these reading comprehension strategies. Therefore, teachers need to be prepared on how to design effective comprehension strategies and how to teach.
Action Research Question The area of focus of this research is to improve reading comprehension through the use of reading strategies. The teacher researcher believes that without a solid foundation of reading strategies the students will struggle throughout their academic and adult life.
